The twelve Césars, as illustrated by F. L. Schmied. In addition to the twelve images of the Césars, Schmied includes a spectacular illustration of an eagle opposite the justification page, and an additional illustration at the end of the book.

The twelve Césars include: Jules César, Auguste, Tibere, Caligula, Claude, Néron, Galba, Othon, Vitellius, Vespasien, Titus and Domitien.

Each image is signed in the stone bottom right. The illustrations are woodblocks printed on Schmied's presses with the help of his student and son, Theo. The first thirty copies contained suites of the illustrations in black and in color.
