Lecuire, who met Andre Lanskoy in 1948 through fellow book artist
Nicolas de Staël, was the one to suggest—when he invited Lanskoy to
illustrate Cortège in 1958—that Lanskoy use a method of collage for
the illustrations. The final product, like Matisse's masterpiece
"Jazz," would be rendered in pochoir my master colorist Beaufumé.
Cortège is now often compared to "Jazz" as perhaps the finest example
of pochoir in the postwar period. Inscribed by Lecuire on the title
page to Maurice Beaufumé, calling him "l'admirable 'coloriste' de
Cortège." Printed on Arches Vellum paper, this example is in very good
condition save for the usual offsetting of some of the plates onto the
adjacent text page, not affecting the images. A beautiful example of
this important book.
