Fabricating Modernity:
The Spirit of Art Deco in French Textiles and Fashion, 1910-1940

France led the world in textile and fashion design during the Art Deco era, continuing its long-standing tradition of excellence in these fields. Precursors to the Art Deco style emerged in the first two decades of the 20th century, a time when the full spectrum of fine and decorative arts
enjoyed renewed vigor and unprecedented individual expression.

In 1925, the style was crystallized by several avant-garde designers and achieved its purest expression in the synthesis of organic and geometric motifs. Throughout the Twenties and Thirties, the fashion and furnishings industries sought lavishly colored and boldly patterned textiles to meet the demands for the modern designs that surfaced after World War I. Innovation was epitomized as the height of chic; the fresh new combinations of colors, materials and compositions were instrumental in defining the spirit of the age.
