Schmied's most ambitious undertaking, this project had to be abandoned
due to the Depression and Schmied's financial problems. In 1936, the
project was revived when Charles Henchoz agreed to sponsor and publish
the book. The 66 illustrations for the book were engraved on wood
by Schmied's son Theo, who also printed the book.
Schmied carefully supervised the printing of the illustrations from
his place in Morocco. The book was completed in 1938 in an edition
of 100 copies, of which the 1st 20 had a double suite in black and
white. There were also 6 copies done for the printer and others involved.
This book is a perfect example of Schmied's devotion to perfection. |
