ex. no.: 170/350.
Bound as issued in original salmon pink moiré silk binding,
with gilt fillets and title on front, in very good condition;
housed in black paper covered box, shaken.
A beautiful copy of this rare book, illustrated by the Viennese
painter, graphic artist, posterist, professor at the Wiener Werkstätte
school and close associate of the Secessionist movement, Julius
Klinger.
Twelve highly erotic etchings, five of which mark the beginning
of each act and two stunning woodblock prints, in full color,
illustrate the second Earl of Rochester's somewhat scandalous
play.
Found here in German, a translation from the original English
manuscript housed in Hamburg's Stadtsbibliothek, the text was
first published in the late 17th century, giving rise to accusations
of obscenity. Almost all copies were destroyed. Following in the
tradition of clandestine printing, this edition of 350 copies
was printed on a private press for subscribers only; the publisher
took an oath never to have more copies printed.
Overall in very nice condition, with few minor stains to some
margins and very slight splitting to interior spine.
