After Stravinsky turned down the offer, the young composer Erik
Satie was commissioned to compose 20 short melodies to accompany
the publication of Charles Martin's charming, sophisticated and
thouroughly amusing drawings. The result of this logical collaboration
between two great artistic innovators of the period (indeed, Satie's
truly original work is recognized by musicologists as having profoundly
influenced 20th century music), is a particularly well-balanced
album, with the composer's calligraphied scores facing Martin's
pochoir-colored illustrations.
This is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of Martin's work
and a testimony of the evolution of his style to embrace a radical
modernity. An important addition to any Art Deco collection. This
is overall a very fine copy; interior clean and fresh.
