Stoneware candlestick (13 1/2" high x 14 1/2" long), depicting
the Canaanite mother goddess Asherah riding a sacred lion, her upright
arms holding a hollow vessel, which like the lion's hollow head and
tail have been formed to hold votive candles, handpainted and glazed
in red, black, blue, green and yellow on a white ground, with incised
designs on Asherah's hair and the lion's body. Marked "Jais",
incised on backside above the lion's hind leg. |
