Adopted from the Longworth family of Ohio, this line was started in 1880
by Maria Longworth Nichols, with the financial support of her father.
Considered a major contributor to the area known as "American art pottery",
this line showed the influence of Japonisme and European Art Nouveau.
Many of the tiles and tile murals in New York City subways are done by
Rookwood. Charles Schmidt, Sara Sax, Sadie Markland, Timothy Hurley, and
Sturgis Lawrence are among the leading Rookwood decorators. The pottery
closed in 1967.
