Original gouache by one of the greatest book artists of the 20th
century, engraver, designer, illustrator, binder and printer François-Louis
Schmied, depicting a fortress with a colorful landscape or trees
in the foreground on the recto, with a design for a text plate featuring
an illuminated inital "C" on the verso.
These are Schmied's original designs for one of his most important
endeavours, the illustration and layout of René Chateaubriand's
novel "Les Aventures du Dernier Abencérage".
Both images are signed in pencil by Schmied.
