Llull-Tapies is the stunning result of Tapies's longtime fascination
with 13th century Catalan figure Ramon Llull, whom Tapies called a
"poet, mystic, philosopher, scientist, and man of action." Tapies had
previously tackled projects that reflected his deep connection to his
Catalan homeland but this was surely the largest. Llull is considered
the first major writer in the Catalan language, and in Tapies' own
collection of rare books there are a number of Llull's books that
depict the scientific and mystic diagrams for which he was famous, and
which had a heavy influence on Tapies.
"Llull-Tapies" contains a
selection of Llull's writings, a critical text by Miquel Batllori, and
of course Tapies' lithographs, which open to nearly three feet wide.
The entire project took him over ten years to complete. A monumental
and personal book, "Llull-Tapies" epitomizes the livre d'artiste.
