Founded by Ignaz Zsolnay in 1862, this Hungarian factory, known for its
complex glazes, was later controlled by Ignaz's brother, Vilmos, who took
control in 1865.
Zsolnay made traditional domestic pottery, and decorative pieces, based
on Persian and Turkish models. Many of the Zsolnay pieces resemble Hispano-Moresque
in their luster, due to the complex iridescent red glaze known as "Eosin".
This glaze was first developed by Vinsce Wartha (1844-1914), who ran an
experimental studio devoted to glazes.
